The same sun that ages a roof out here is brutal on a skylight, and the failures tend to show up sooner than owners expect.
First, hard UV yellows and cracks older acrylic domes until they lose clarity and structural strength. Then the daily heat-and-cool cycle dries out seals and works the flashing loose, opening tiny gaps that find water during the rare hard rain. Meanwhile, a skylight that was installed like a window rather than a roof penetration never stood a chance — it was set without a proper curb or correct flashing and was only ever going to be a question of when, not if, it leaked. The result is a fogged pane, a cracked dome, or a slow leak running down the frame into the ceiling.

We cut the opening cleanly, build or set the curb correctly, and flash the unit into the surrounding roof so it sheds water the way the roof does. The unit is only half the job; the durable part is how it meets the roof.

Most calls we get are for a unit that has started leaking, fogged up between the panes, or cracked. When we open one up, the problem is almost never the glass — it's the flashing or seal where the skylight repair meets the roof, often because the original installer treated it as a window. I had an amazing experience with David, the owner of Dove Roofing. My family has a home in Joshua Tree that needed emergency service during a historic wind/hail/snow storm. Skylight Questions Homeowners Ask
Do skylights always leak eventually?
No — a properly flashed skylight doesn't leak. Nearly every leaking skylight we open up was installed without correct flashing or curb detail, which is a workmanship problem, not an inherent flaw in skylights. Done right, with the curb and flashing detailed for this climate, a skylight stays water-tight for its full service life.
Why is my skylight fogging up between the panes?
Fogging between the panes means the seal on a double-glazed unit has failed, letting humid air in where it condenses. That seal can't be repaired — once it's gone, the unit needs replacing. The good news is it's a straightforward swap, and newer glazing will perform better against the heat than the failed unit did.
Can you repair my skylight or does it need replacing?
It depends on what's failed. If the glass and frame are sound and the leak is coming from the flashing or seal at the roof, we can usually re-flash and re-seal it. If the frame is cracked, the glazing seal has failed, or an old acrylic dome has degraded, replacement is the better spend. We'll give you the honest answer after we inspect it.
Will a new skylight make the room hotter in summer?
It can if you choose the wrong glazing, which is why we steer desert clients toward low-E or heat-reducing glass and, where it makes sense, vented units that let hot air escape. Placed and glazed correctly, a modern skylight brings in light without turning the room into a greenhouse.
Do you flash skylights during a roof replacement?
Always. Leaving an old skylight's flashing untouched on a brand-new roof is asking for a leak, so we re-flash existing skylights as part of any roof replacement or repair around them. It's the difference between a roof that's watertight everywhere and one with a built-in weak spot.
